Weekend violence, gunfire leaves 2 dead, 7 injured

A man was fatally shot early Sunday in North Philadelphia, and homicide detectives are investigating what police are calling a “suspicious death” in Juniata.

Officers were called at around 3 a.m. Sunday to the 2100 block of N. 15th Street, near Temple University’s main campus, where they found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest inside of an apartment, police said.

Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, and investigators made an arrest and recovered a gun, according to police.

Minutes later, just before 3:15 a.m., in a separate incident, authorities found a 65-year-old man dead inside a home on the 4100 block of I Street, police said. The victim was in the living room and had suffered facial trauma, investigators said.

Police detained a 21-year-old man in connection with the incident, but they did not release any further information Sunday.

Seven other people were wounded in shootings over the weekend.

Someone allegedly shot a 35-year-old man multiple times in self defense Saturday night or early Sunday morning inside an apartment on the 3900 block of N. 5th Street in the Hunting Park neighborhood.

Officers took the man, who sustained gunshot wounds to his upper torso, to Temple University Hospital, and he is expected to survive, according to the PPD.

Investigators did not share additional details, and police did not provide an exact time for when the shooting occurred.

Two men were struck when shots were fired at around 11 p.m. Saturday inside a property on the 1000 block of N. Marshall Street in Northern Liberties, according to authorities.

Police said a 27-year-old man was shot in his left eye and a 25-year-old man was hit in his lower right leg. Both were taken to Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition.

An apparent accidental shooting Saturday night inside a property on the 700 block of S. 7th Street in Bella Vista left two men wounded, investigators said.

A 29-year-old man was shot in his arm and chest, and a bullet struck a 26-year-old man in his hand, according to police. Both showed up in a private vehicle to Pennsylvania Hospital and are expected to survive. Police said they do not know the exact timing of the incident.

In Mantua, gunfire erupted just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday outside on the 3400 block of Mount Vernon Street, authorities said.

Investigators said a 23-year-old man was hospitalized with three gunshot wounds to his abdomen, and a 23-year-old woman was shot in her left foot. Both were listed in stable condition following the shooting.
