3 killed, 6 injured in West Philadelphia mass shooting

Three men were killed and six other people were injured when gunfire erupted amid a crowd gathered early Sunday morning in West Philadelphia, authorities said.

The mass shooting happened at around 2 a.m. on the 1200 block of N. Alden Street, near Girard Avenue, in the Carroll Park neighborhood, according to investigators.

Medics pronounced a 33-year-old man dead at the scene, police said. Two other victims – a 23-year-old man and a 29-year-old man – died of their injuries a short time later at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the PPD said. Police have not publicly identified those killed in the shooting.

Five men and a woman between the ages of 26 and 30 were also shot and hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.

No arrests were reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and investigators have not provided details about a possible motive. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities believe there was a shootout between multiple groups at the get-together. Spent shell casings found in the area indicate that guns utilizing several different calibers were fired, according to investigators.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel has “remained in constant contact” with homicide detectives, Mayor Cherelle Parker and members of her administration about the mass shooting, the police department said in a statement.

Anyone with information is asked to call or text the PPD’s tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

The incident was the second multi-victim shooting of the weekend. Early Saturday morning, three women – ages 19, 20 and 21 – were struck by gunfire on the 6200 block of N. Broad Street, near Chelten Avenue. All were expected to survive, police said.

Overall, the number of people killed in homicides and wounded in shootings is down about 40% across Philadelphia compared to the same time last year, according to police data.
