Brian Westbrook is making a trip to Pittsburgh today. It’s not for pleasure, and it may result in the end of his business.
The Eagles running back is scheduled to first meet with neuropsychologist Dr. Mark R. Lovell and then visit neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Maroon, according to a statement issued by head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder.
Both doctors consulted with former NFL stars Troy Aikman, Steve Young and Bill Romanowski when they were battling severe head trauma. All three men were forced to retire due to long-term repercussions from concussions.
“The number one thing is Brian’s health,” coach Andy Reid said Monday. “You can put football aside and make sure that he’s taken care of here.”
Westbrook suffered his second concussion this month last Sunday when he was caught between a block by Jason Avant and Chargers linebacker Eric Weddle. He left the game in the third quarter and didn’t return. Westbrook had shown no concussion-related symptoms before Sunday’s game.
