One of the biggest reasons the Temple football team — which is in the midst of its second straight 10-win season —can’t keep a head coach is that it’s not a big conference, big time football school. Their newest hire,Geoff Collins (who sources report is going to be the new school skipper) has a big school pedigree and is a defensive minded coach, which best befits the Owls roster.
Collins is departing the University of Florida where he is the team’s defensive coordinator. He will leave Gainsville’s sixth ranked total defensive squad for North Philly and the Owls, ranked third in the country. The coach has worked as the defensive coordinator prior to three years at Florida withMississippi State and Florida International. On the assistant level, he has worked atUCF, Georgia Tech, Western Carolina, Albright College Fordham and Alabama. Like his Temple predecessorsSteve Addazio,Al Golden and recently departed Matt Rhule (who will coach at Baylor next year), Collins will be a head coach for the first time with the Owls.
The Owls will play in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland, against Wake Forest on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
