The Sixers announced on Wednesday that they signed free-agent forward Anthony Brown. According to ESPN’s Front Office Insider Bobby Marks, Brown inked an Exhibit 10 contract with Philadelphia.
The 25-year-old forward played in the NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings last month.
With the addition of Brown, the Sixers now have 19 players under contract and could add one more player to fill their final training camp spot.
If you are not familiar with what an Exhibit 10 clause is, it is basically a one-year deal worth the minimum salary. But it could also include an optional bonus between the amounts of $5K-$50K.
For players that sign an Exhibit 10 contract, they could have their deal converted to a two-way contract before the regular season begins. However, if it was already converted to a two-way contract, it could be changed to a standard NBA contract.
Last season, Brown was signed to a two-way deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 25-year-old Brown only appeared in one game with Minnesota last year as he spent most of the season with their G-League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves.
In 45 games with Iowa, he averaged 18.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 37.3 minutes per game. Brown also shot 45.9 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three-point range on 5.4 attempts per game.
If you did not watch the Iowa Wolves play last season, then you missed out on the show that Brown and Philly native Amile Jefferson put on. While Jefferson was dominating in the paint and on the glass, Brown was shooting the ball well from the perimeter.
As we all know, it will be tough for Brown to make the Sixers’ 15-man roster as they are pretty much set. However, if he can shoot the ball well in camp and the preseason, then it could lead to the team possibly considering him for a two-way deal.
The Sixers currently have second-round pick Shake Milton and point guard Demetrius Jackson on two-way deals, but Jackson did not look impressive in the Summer League back in July.
With Brown’s ability to step out and shoot the three-pointer consistently and running in transition, he fits in perfectly with what the Sixers like to do on offense.
Last season, he had an ORtg of 104 and DRtg of 106 to go along with a TS% (true shooting percentage) of 56.1. All these numbers indicate that Brown was a productive player, specifically on the offensive end.
The former Stanford Cardinal was drafted in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft with the Los Angeles Lakers and actually played in 29 games that season.
During his rookie season, Brown also spent some time with the then Los Angeles D-Fenders.
After that, the Erie Bayhawks selected Brown with the first overall pick in the 2016 NBA G-League Draft. With Erie, he averaged a career-high 20.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 37.7 minutes per game.
