Tomorrow marks the 75th birthday of one of the most treasured singer-songwriters in the history of modern music: Bob Dylan. To mark his unique accomplishments, WXPN 88.5FM has decided to devote an entire day of programming to the living legend. Bruce Warren, WXPN’s Assistant General Manager of Programming comments: Julian Booker, host of WXPN’s “Sleepy Hollow” adds: A special edition of World Cafe Live at Noon will feature Mason Porter and friends performing Dylan’s signature brand of mellow yet influential music from upstairs at World Cafe Live. The show will be free of charge and reservations can be made on the WXPN website. Paul Wilkson, guitarist for Mason Porter, equates playing Dylan’s music to “using Ali’s boxing gloves, Picasso’s brush, or Shakespeare’s quill.” David Dye will continue the festivities from 2-4PM on World Cafe by having guest bands discuss and play their favorite Dylan music. The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn will wrap things up from 6-7PM with a special edition of the show featuring all-cover versions of Dylan’s songs. Finally, in between its special programming, WXPN will of course play Dylan’s music on both its FM station and streaming online at xpn.org. The tribute will total to 13 hours so expect to hear everything from “Like a Rolling Stone” to “Under Control,” no matter when you’re tuning in. The times may be a-changin’, but Bob Dylan surely is timeless.
“There’s no doubt that Bob Dylan is the most important singular singer-songwriter of all time. His impact on musicians, popular culture and the arts, and matters of social, cultural, and political importance, is unparalleled.”
“There is no other songwriter, in the last 50 years, that has had as lasting an influence, or created as significant a catalogue as Dylan has. There is simply no artist, save for maybe The Beatles, as important in shaping what we know as popular music.”
