Where To Volunteer In Philly

Many people want to lend a helping hand, but often aren’t sure how to do it, let alone if they can do it. Giving Tuesday, nationally recognized on Nov. 29, is a reminder that the amount of money in your wallet shouldn’t determine how much you can give back to the community. Donating by your time is just as impactful. Here are a few organizations in the Philadelphia region that are always looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand.

Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter
399 Market St

Dedicated to helping people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families, this national organizationhosts support groups, educational sessions and more. In terms of volunteering, Associate Director of Communications, Sherylle Linton Jones says, “There are opportunities to serve as support group facilitators, join our Speakers Bureau, and help out at fundraising events like the Walk To End Alzheimer’s.” Volunteers can also donate time assisting staff at the Delaware Valley Chapter headquarters in Philadelphia or any of the regional or branch offices.

Project HOME
1515 Fairmount Avenue

Project HOME is committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and alleviate its causes. Vice President of Development and Communications, Annette M. Jeffrey, cautions “that people experiencing homelessness say that they often feel invisible.” She encourages to see if someone needs food instead of giving money. But at the very least, “acknowledging someone by looking them in the eye, can help someone feel that they matter.” Volunteer opportunities include tutoring at one of their resident sites as well as serving meals.

ACCT Philly
111 W Hunting Park Ave

Our furry companions need help, too, and Managing Director Ame Dorminy is passionate about getting the word out. “Always speak up about the benefits of adoption, spay-neuter, and being a responsible pet owner. Use your voice!” she said. Volunteering can go beyond adoption, as ACCT is open to help with data entry, dog walking, cat socializing, photography, and clinic and surgery assistance.

Mural Arts Philadelphia
1727-29 Mt Vernon St.

Cari Feiler Bender, the mastermind behind media and public relations initiatives for Mural Arts Philadelphia, says that a robust volunteer program plays a huge role in helping Mural Arts achieve its mission and interact with the public through events, paint days and art advocacy. Plenty of events are coming up in December that could use your help. To find out more, email volunteers@muralarts.org.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
100 N. 20th St.
lls.org

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” Director of Marketing & Communications Gregory R. Seitter says. They are “always setting the standard for compassion and kindness.” Depending on your interests and skills, LLS will match volunteers with assignments, that could include office support, help with fundraising events and donor development. Seitter also gives a critical reminder: “It is important to give back to your community, because no matter how tough you think your life is, there’s always someone who has to face challenges that are even tougher than yours.”
