Philly-area-born, Nashville-based artist Wilby, the indie-rock project of songwriter and performer Maria Crawford, released two brand new singles, ‘Pleaser’ and ‘Spinner,’ ahead of their headlining performance at Nashville’s The End on Wednesday, March 26.
In this double single release, Wilby examines the complexities of relationship dynamics in ‘Pleaser,’ raising a lens to self-sacrificial tendencies and questioning whether altruism in partnerships is genuine and truly healthy.
“‘Pleaser’ is a reflection on the fine line between love and submission, comfortability and control, and how sometimes the desire to please can cloud the safeness of a relationship,” Crawford said in a release.
Meanwhile, ‘Spinner’ is a bit more introspective in nature. It reflects on an inner struggle to enjoy victory while constantly choosing the arduous journey.
“I’ve always been someone who gravitates toward the harder path and struggles to truly celebrate my wins.” Crawford said. “[‘Spinner’] is a reflection of that inner conflict—the part of me that feels like things only have value if they’re hard, even when I’ve worked so hard to get to a place of accomplishment.”
Originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Crawford moved to Music City in 2014 and has since made an impact on the independent music scene. She says music is a way for her to identify and process emotions, find a way to be heard, and foster human connection. Inspired by the works of notable artists and groups like Carole King, Patti Smith, Death Cab for Cutie, and more, Crawford’s songs explore the power of telling one’s story while embracing the shared human experience.
