It’s an abundance of riches at Villanova right now.
Not only is the men’s basketball team ranked fifth in the country and fresh off a Final Four appearance, but the football team is primed for a run at a national championship.
After their fourth straight win last Saturday, the Wildcats (9-1, 6-1) moved up to No. 2 in the Sports Network Top 25 poll. A win over rival Delaware on Saturday would clinch the Colonial Athletic Association title and an automatic berth in the postseason.
“It’s always extra special against Delaware,” coach Andy Talley said. “It’s in our backyard. Let’s go get it.”
This game is billed annually as the “Battle of the Blue.” Delaware could earn a spot in the playoffs with a win, so this game will be even more meaningful.
But, the Wildcats have played meaningful games all season. This is nothing new. The highlight was a 21-20 win two weeks ago at top-ranked Richmond. Senior wide receiver Brandyn Harvey pulled in a spectacular one-handed catch in the end zone from 29 yards out for a 21-20 victory. The win snapped Richmond’s 17-game winning streak.
“We knew we were going to be a good team,” Talley said. “Ultimately, we want to win a [national] championship.”
