Will the Eagles and Jalen Hurts agree to a huge Mahomes-like deal?

The Eagles have done everything right this offseason. For a team that was on the verge of being in rebuilding mode just a few seasons ago, they were able to turn things around quickly and become a contender. Part of the reason for that quick turnaround was QB Jalen Hurts.

Hurts was a second-round pick that was drafted to be Carson Wentz’s backup. After getting benched against the Packers, Wentz saw the relationship between him and the Eagles as irreparable. 

Fortunately for Philadelphia, that was a great move for them. Trading Wentz to the Colts gave the Eagles an extra first-round pick and also allowed them to see what they had on Jalen Hurts.

Fast forward to two years later, Jalen Hurts has catapulted himself to the upper echelon of QBs in the league. He was the MVP runner-up last season and he also led his team to their second Super Bowl in 6 years.

The Eagles have their guy

The Eagles now find themselves at a pivotal moment for the franchise. Hurts is eligible for a contract extension but they have to be smart this time around. As a franchise, you don’t want one contract to limit the way you build your team. 

Luckily the Eagles have a QB on their hands that wants more than just a big contract, he wants to win. This begs the question as to what kind of contract will the Eagles and Hurts agree to.

An anonymous NFL executive believes that the Eagles and Hurts will agree to a Patrick Mahomes-like deal. Which is very likely because of the potential of the Jalen Hurts. Back in 2020, Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million extension with the Chiefs that gave him $63 million fully guaranteed at signing.

That contract has given the Chiefs enough flexibility to build around him for years to come. And of course, this also allows Mahomes to compete for a Super Bowl year in and year out. 

The anonymous executive told Mike Sando of the Athletic “I think Hurts will do a Mahomes-type deal with a good structure for the team,” he said. “He seems to get it.”

That’s the key thing. Hurts gets it. He knows what it takes to win and is in it for the game as opposed to the paycheck. If the Eagles give him this monster deal then it secures his place in the NFL for the next ten years and gives Philly the franchise QB that they’ve always wanted.
