Snow began falling early Monday morning across Philadelphia, its suburbs, as well as New Jersey and Delaware.
Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs are expected to get 3 to 5 inches of snow, while Southern New Jersey and parts of Delaware could see closer to 8 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy snow was still falling across Philadelphia by Monday afternoon.
All Schools District of Philadelphia schools and government buildings were closed Monday due to inclement weather, and many areas declared a snow emergency. PennDOT continues to work to clear major roadways throughout the area, and residents can check the status of local plow trucks online and on the 511PA app.
Mayor Cherelle Parker has advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel on Monday and exercise caution when driving.
For those who must venture out, AAA has offered winter driving tips to help keep motorists safe during snow and icy conditions — stay home if possible, however, if you must drive, be sure to do so slowly. If you lose traction and begin to spin or skid, don’t slam on the brakes. Rather, steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go, until your tires regain traction.
