Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs are once again on a winter storm watch. With snow expected throughout the area, Metro has some tips on how to stay safe on the road amidst the storm.
Also, drivers can stay updated with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s 511pa.com, which provides current traffic conditions statewide.
Driving tips for local commuters
Rain, snow, and ice cause road conditions that can quickly become dangerous. Slippery conditions can dramatically reduce tire traction—drivers should always slow down and break early to avoid any extra loss of traction.
Drivers should give other vehicles extra room. Your vehicle will not slow down as quickly as it normally does, so drivers should always increase following distances. Always be aware of open space on at least one side of your vehicle if you need to change lanes in an emergency.
Remember to be gentle, especially with steering, acceleration, and braking. If you do not, the vehicle will lose balance more easily, increasing the chance of skidding. Always steer, accelerate, and brake smoothly. If you skid, do not slam on the brakes.

If you can avoid it, do not stop completely, as the momentum will keep your vehicle from becoming stuck. Even if it’s bit by bit, keep moving as opposed to coming to a complete stop. That’s also true when going up hills.
Be prepared
Should your vehicle become stuck, do not abandon it, as it may be your only shelter. AAA recommends that drivers experiencing these issues stay with their vehicles. If you can start your engine, run it only long enough to keep warm. Ensure the exhaust pipe is snow-free to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide fumes from entering your vehicle.
Finally, be sure to keep an emergency supplies bag in the car with items like gloves, blankets, flashlights, and reflective equipment. Be sure to keep an ice scraper, battery jumper cables, towels, a first aid kit, and if possible, sand or kitty litter (to help your tires gain traction). Also, it is a good idea to keep snacks and water in case of an emergency.
