A woman was killed and two children were seriously injured in a house fire Wednesday morning in Mayfair, authorities said.
The blaze was reported just before 5:45 a.m. on the 3100 block of Stirling Street, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.
Firefighters found an adult female dead inside the two-story rowhome, and a boy and a girl were rescued from the property, officials said. Both children were listed in critical condition at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, the PFD added.
Authorities have not identified the woman or released the ages for any of the victims. Medics also treated two men, a boy and a girl for minor injuries at the scene, police said.
It was not clear Wednesday what caused the flames, and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the source.
At least one adjacent house sustained significant damage, and a total of 10 people were displaced, according to the PFD.
Officials said 75 fire personnel responded to the fire, which crews battled for about 30 minutes before bringing under control.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Carl Randolph told reporters that the home where the fire originated had no smoke alarms present. Philadelphia homeowners can request free smoke alarm installations by calling 311 or using the Philly311 app. Landlords are required to install the devices on each level of a home.
