Woman dies after being struck by lightning at the Jersey shore

A woman who was struck by lightning in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey during a storm Saturday night died this morning, according to a report from The Asbury Park Press.

Indira Tursunova, 48, of New City, N.Y. was walking on a sea wall, trailing about 20 feet behind a group of family members and friends, during a fast-moving thunderstorm. At least two people, including a borough police officer, saw lightning directly strike the woman, police told the paper.

Tursunova died of her injuries shortly after 6 a.m. this morning at Monmouth Medical Center. A medical examiner is currently reviewing her death.

The storm left tens of thousands of residents in Ocean and Monmouth Counties without power. For many citizens, electricity was just being restored today.
