Woman gives birth on Broad Street Line subway train, exits with umbilical cord attached

A woman gave birth on a Broad Street Line subway car yesterday afternoon and reportedly began to exit the station with the umbilical cord still attached.

SEPTA press officer Kristin Geiger said that the woman departed a northbound train at the Olney Transportation Center around 2 p.m. yesterday and climbed the steps. She then approached SEPTA police officer Loyd Rodgers and told him that she had just given birth on the train, Geiger said. The child – a healthy baby boy – was reportedly still attached to the umbilical cord.

Rogers kept the baby warm and made sure that both he and the mother got to the hospital. They were admitted to Einstein Medical Center, where they are in good condition.

Geiger did not know where the woman was traveling or whether there were witnesses to the delivery on the train, but did say that passengers at the Olney Transportation Center were congratulating the new mother.
