A 65-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by a driver who lost control of her SUV while backing down a one-way street Monday morning outside a Southwest Philadelphia school, according to police.

Authorities said the crash happened at around 7:35 a.m. on the 6600 block of Regent Street, behind J.W. Catharine Elementary School.

Investigators believe a 30-year-old woman was attempting to reverse her SUV when the vehicle went into a tailspin and ended up striking the pedestrian, who was standing on the sidewalk nearby.

Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene minutes later. The PPD has not publicly identified her. Fox 29 reported that she had been walking her grandchildren to school at the time of the crash.

School District of Philadelphia spokesperson Christina Clark told Metro that classes had begun and that “all students were in the building when this occurred.” Information on Catharine Elementary’s website states that the school day begins at 7:30 a.m.

Police said the driver was uninjured and remained at the scene. Her vehicle was towed in order to conduct a safety check, according to authorities.

The PPD said the crash remains under investigation.
