University City’s World Cafe Live has always booked concerts that reflect Philly’s diverse communities.
And in keeping with that tradition, WCL will present “Puerta Abierta—starting May 27 and running through Aug. 19— in dedication to further showcase the city’s Latinx multiculturalism. Director of Programming Jeff Meyers and Director of Education Josh Campbell both point to the continuum of Latin-based live showcases at their homebase.
“We actually have many more live Latin shows here in 2022,” notes Meyers. Puerta Abierta, however, is a focused initiative, that additionally touches on bilingual signage, bilingual Bridge Sessions exploring Latinx music and culture and into our culinary program.”
The first of Puerta Abierta’s eight performances stars the young, already-legendary singer-songwriter Xenia Rubinos, a favorite of NPR, WXPN-FM and WCL since the release of her first album, ‘Black Terry Cat’.
“It’s meant everything to me to be featured on NPR, championed by World Cafe Live, and was a dream come true to be included alongside so many artists whose work I admire,” says Rubinos. “It’s like being invited into a really beautiful community of music lovers.”
Kicking off WCL’s Puerta Abierta series is also thrilling to Rubinos, as it is the very first show of the Una Rosa Tour, and her first headlining show in years.
“It makes sense to me that my new show will premiere in Philadelphia, because it’s a city that has repeatedly shown me much love, particularly around trying new things — and I’m really stretching out on this show with many new performance elements that I’ve been wanting to try for a long time.”
‘Una Rosa’ from 2021 is radically different from her ‘Black Terry Cat’ debut in that it is, in Rubinos’ mind, more free, and in search of a new spirit after a time of loss.
“The music on ‘Una Rosa’ is more electronic than ‘Black Terry Cat’ and is more heavily influenced by danzon, bolero and rumba music,” she says. “In ‘Una Rosa’, I also leaned into my voice in a new way exploring it through different characters and expanding my sound palette in production to be more cinematic.
“I love my people and anytime I get to share space with my Latinx community I am deeply grateful,” adds Rubinos. “I hope that promoters and venues continue to create opportunities for audiences of diverse backgrounds to enjoy live music. I think representation is important and also making the extra effort to invite folks from the community who may not have felt welcome before in a space because of programming or cost or just that no one that looks like them is being presented there. So, I think seeking folks out in the community and taking the extra step to invite them to the shows, partnering with youth groups to give access to young people who may not be able to afford going to a show, is an important and practical step that leaders in cultural institutions can take to ensure they are building community.”

Y de acuerdo con esa tradición, WCL presentará “Puerta Abierta”, a partir del 27 de mayo y hasta el 19 de agosto, con el fin de mostrar aún más el multiculturalismo latino de la ciudad. “Para mí, tiene sentido que mi nuevo espectáculo se estrene en Filadelfia, porque es una ciudad que me ha mostrado mucho amor en repetidas ocasiones, particularmente en cuanto a probar cosas nuevas, y realmente me estoy esforzando en este programa con muchos elementos de actuación nuevos que he querido intentar durante mucho tiempo”.

Entonces, creo que buscar gente en la comunidad y dar un paso adicional para invitarlos a los espectáculos, asociarse con grupos de jóvenes para dar acceso a los jóvenes que tal vez no puedan pagar ir a un espectáculo, es un paso importante y práctico que los líderes de las instituciones culturales pueden tomar para asegurarse de que están construyendo una comunidad”.
