You don’t have to run from math

Many students who are considering going back to school for an associate’s or bachelor’s degree are nervous about having to take math again. Those going into a field like business or computers will obviously be taking several courses, but almost everyone has to take at least one math class to meet general-education requirements.

Don’t let the thought of revisiting algebra keep you from pursuing your dreams — help is available for those who need help with math, including both those who are a little rusty and those who have full-fledged math phobias.

“There are weekly workshops for most of our math classes,” explains Gail Chaskes, a math specialist at Community College of Philadelphia’s Learning Lab. “They’re completely free, and you don’t need to sign up in advance — just come by.” The workshops meet at a variety of times, so students can find one that works with their schedule.

The workshops, held on the main campus, are taught by math specialists. These are members of the college’s faculty who all have at least a master’s degree in math.

One-on-one tutoring is available at all of CCP’s regional campuses, but students must sign up.
