Your guide to leaf peeping in and around Philadelphia

If the coolness in the air is any indication, it looks like we’re finally getting real fall weather in September which means it’s time to start planning your leaf peeping outings. Sure, you can travel outside the city limits over a weekend, but if you’re pressed for time, there’s no reason you can’t stop and gaze at the foliage on your way to work, on your lunchbreak or even on a leisurely weekend stroll.

Schuylkill River Trail
25th and Locust

Next time you’re jogging or biking down the Schuylkill River Trail, take a moment to stop and peep some fall leaves! With the picturesque water backdrop behind you, combined with pops of orange, yellow and red foliage, it would be hard not to take a winning Instagram shot here.

Wissahickon Valley Park
Valley Green Rd.

The hiking is beautiful any time of year in the Wissahickon but when fall comes, this Philadelphia gem becomes even more magical. With 2,042 acres of ground to cover, you’ll need to make repeat trips for the full foliage experience.

 

Bartram’s Garden
5400 Lindbergh Blvd.

This 45-acre National Historic Landmark, created by America’s first botanist, John Bartram, dates back to the 1850s. Aside from being a great place to take in the changing leaves you can also learn a thing or two about from their guided tours.

Morris Arboretum
100 E. Northwestern Ave.

With more than 12,000 plants in their living collection, there’s a lot to take in at the Morris Arboretum. To help you on your leaf peeping mission, why not take their Great Trees tour? You’re bound to see the best and brightest fall foliage that way.

Independence National Historic Park
520 Chestnut St.

Already a popular spot for its historical significance, Independence National Historic Park is also great for taking in the fall scenery. While you won’t see a ton of trees, you’ll see just enough for it to feel like fall in the city with a side of history.

Washington Square Park

Who says you have to be on your feet in your leaf peeping adventures? Cozy up on a bench in Washington Square Park with a good book and a coffee from nearby Talula’s Daily and to take in the fall foliage, all you have to do is look up and around — you’re surrounded by trees! It’s also a great place for people watching, if you’re into that sort of thing.
