On Monday, hip hop artist Meek Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison for violating parole. In response, 18,000 of his fans have signed a Care2 Petition so far to disbar the judge who sentenced him — Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley.
The petition calls attention to the fact that Meek Mill’s sentence is greater than the prison time given to “five killer cops” combined: Darren Wilson, who killed Michael Brown; Timothy Loehmann, who killed Tamir Rice; Daniel Pantaleo, who killed Eric Garner; Sean Williams, who killed John Crawford; and Michael Slager who killed Walter Scott.
Many celebrities have taken to social media to speak out against the “unjust” sentence, including hip hop mogul Jay-Z:
“The sentence handed down by the Judge – against the recommendation of the Assistant District Attorney and Probation Officer – is unjust and heavy-handed,” he said in a Facebook post. “We will always stand by and support Meek Mill, both as he attempts to right this wrongful sentence and then in returning to his musical career.”
