5 killed in weekend violence

At least five people were killed and five others were injured in violence over the weekend in Philadelphia.

Two men were fatally shot at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning on the 2600 block of W. Sergeant Street in North Philadelphia, according to authorities.

Police said a 28-year-old man was shot once in the chest and a 29-year-old was also struck in the chest and right arm. Both died at Temple University Hospital a short time after the shooting.

Investigators did not provide a potential motive for the killings, and no one has been arrested in the case.

In Olney, a 36-year-old man was killed and two other men were wounded when gunfire erupted just before midnight Saturday on the 5300 block of Rising Sun Avenue, police said.

Authorities have not identified the victim, saying only that he died after being shot multiple times throughout his body.

A 28-year-old man was also struck once in his right thigh, and a 37-year-old man was shot in his hip and left knee, according to police. Both men were later listed in stable condition at Einstein Medical Center.

Earlier, at around 10 p.m. Saturday, two people were shot in the hallway of an apartment building on the 4400 block of Sheffield Avenue in Holmesburg, investigators said.

One of the victims, a 31-year-old man who suffered several gunshot wounds, died early Sunday morning, police said. An 18-year-old man was struck in his abdomen and is in critical condition, according to authorities.

Police have made an arrest after a 62-year-old man was stabbed to death Saturday afternoon inside a home in Mayfair.

Officers responded just after 1 p.m. Saturday to the 4000 block of Gilham Street for a report of a person screaming. They found the victim, who has not been identified, in an upstairs bedroom with lacerations to his head and neck, investigators said.

Authorities said Sunday that 28-year-old Carey Jessie was arrested in connection with the killing. He is charged with murder, possessing an instrument of crime and evidence tampering, according to court records.

Police said the stabbing stemmed from an argument but did not release further details.

In Kensington, someone shot a 36-year-old woman in her left arm at around 12:15 a.m. Sunday on the 2100 block of E. Stella Street, investigators said. She was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries.

A 22-year-old man was hospitalized after being stabbed several times at around 11:45 p.m. Saturday inside a Wawa on the 7700 block of Frankford Avenue in Holmesburg, according to authorities. He is expected to physically recover.

And a 33-year-old man is in critical condition after shots were fired Saturday night in North Philadelphia. Police said the victim was shot six times at around 10:15 p.m. on the 1400 block of W. Butler Street.
