7-year-old boy and woman shot while in West Philly car

A 7-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman were shot while sitting in a car in West Philly.

It was reported that the shooting happened at 9:30 p.m., Wednesday night. CBS reports that the shooting occurred at 57th street and Girard Avenue.

After the shooting occurred, it was reported that the woman drove to a family member’s home within the 2100 block of Van Pelt Street in North Philadelphia. After they arrived, someone else drove the injured pair to Temple University Hospital. CBS reports they were taken to the hospital in a different car.

Police told outlets that someone fired at least nine shots into the car. It was reported that the driver’s side door was full of bullets.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told outlets that, “We don’t know if this 24-year-old was targeted. However, we believe she was driving the vehicle, and there are multiple bullet holes in the driver door, so someone was either shooting into that vehicle, or someone was shooting her, who was driving the vehicle.”

The 24-year-old woman was hit in her knee and shoulder, and the 7-year-old was shot in the foot. Outlets report both are stable and recovering well.

Small spoke about the victims and said that, “She is conscious, she appears to be in good spirits and she’s in stable condition. She, as well as the 7-year-old boy, are very, very lucky.”

Small added, “I did see [the boy] at the hospital, he is conscious, he is talking, and he’s not even crying, so he’s a brave little boy.”

Police reported that the victims know each other, but it was not made immediately clear what exactly their relationship is. Officials told outlets they are interviewing family members of the victims, and they are also looking at surveillance footage.

The investigation is on-going. As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made.

News of this shooting comes within days of a report detailing that over 106 people under age 18 have been shot in Philly.
