8 things to do in Philly this weekend, Oct. 8-11

MUSIC

The Wood Brothers
Saturday, 8 p.m.
Union Transfer
1026 Spring Garden St.
$25 – $27, 215-232-2100
www.utphilly.com
This trio of seriously skilled musicians makes folk music flecked with hints of jazz and blues. The band’s latest release, “Paradise,” is steeped in the paradox that pursuing the things you want in life may be the very thing that keeps you from obtaining them. Their musicianship is as tight as their vocal harmony is sweet.

Laura Shay Band
Saturday, 8 p.m.
Tin Angel
20 S. Second St.
$15, 215-928-0770
www.tinangel.com
It doesn’t take long to fall in love with Laura Shay’s songs. Her poetic, introspective lyrics shed so much light on both the beautiful and heartbreaking aspects of being human. Whether behind a piano or strumming an acoustic guitar, Shay has a stage presence that will reel you in.

IVA
Saturday, 8 p.m.
Melodies Cafe
2 East Lancaster Ave., Ardmore
$10, 610-645-5269
www.melodiescafe.com
After living in Stockholm and gaining some new insight into life, this classically trained singer/songwriter wrote and recorded a new EP, “LEAP,” with the help of Tim Sonnefeld of MilkBoy Studios. It’s a short record rife with atypical rock instruments: accordion brass, strings and oboe.

Free, 215-336-1455

Coinciding with East Passyunk’s Second Saturday vintage flea market and sidewalk sale, the music and arts fest will feature 10 bands and DJs, from likes of Elissa Janelle Velveteen, Lovers League, Lauren Scott and more.

Fishtown RiverCity Festival
Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.

1341 N. Delaware Ave.
Free

It’s the 25th anniversary of Outfest, held on National Coming Out Day, and the Philly celebration is one of the biggest, stretching out over 10 blocks of the Gayborhood with live music, games, food and drink, drag shows and shopping.

FOOD

Chinatown Night Market
Thursday, 7 p.m.
10th Street between Arch and Vine streets
Free
www.yeshinightmarket.com
Head to Chinatown on Thursday evening for all types of delicious food — everything from The Cow and the Curd, to Yakitori Boy, to Phol 20 — plus live music, karaoke and dance performances.

THEATER

‘Hooked!’
Friday through Oct. 25
Inis Nua Theatre Company
Fergie’s Pub
1214 Sansom St.
$15 – $30, 215-454-9776
www.inisnuatheatre.org
This eerie Irish play arrives upstairs at Fergie’s just in time for Halloween. Trying to avoid her past and rebuild her life, Lydia escapes to a country village. Her neighbors, Tom and Mary, seem perfectly normal — but they and the rest of the town quickly become suspicious of her. Growing tension threatens to reveal a web of secrets that live beneath the surface of this small community.
