A “First Eight” Scholarship for Women is now being offered for 2020

It has been 100 years since the nation ratified the 19th Amendment, but one important moment in the state’s history is still playing a huge role in our culture today. After the ratification, in the next election in 1922, eight women were sworn into the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

According to a release, in honor of those “first eight,” AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need, announced the First Eight Scholarship for Women, eight merit and need-based scholarships for female high school seniors. The scholarship will provide $20,000 ($5,000 per year for four years) to recipients to attend a four-year college or university in Pennsylvania.

“We are proud to recognize the women of Pennsylvania who were the first to represent our Commonwealth, and seek to carry their legacy forward by supporting the next generation of female leaders,” said Paul Tufano, AmeriHealth Caritas Chairman and CEO in a release. “As a company at the forefront of addressing the social determinants of health, we are investing in our community’s future female leaders by giving them the tools and opportunities to succeed; and education provides a pathway to better health, better prospects, and a better life.”

The release also states that Scholarship recipients must meet the following criteria: 1) be a Pennsylvania resident and Pennsylvania female high school senior who has been accepted to a four-year college or university in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; 2) have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and 3) be a U.S. citizen graduating by the spring of the current academic year.

Pennsylvania female high school seniors who are planning to attend a PA-based university or college can check out all of the criteria through amerihealthcaritas.com if interested.

Applications with more details will also be dispensed to high schools throughout the state as well. The deadline to submit applications is March 31, 2020, and recipients of the First Eight Scholarship for Women will be announced in May 2020.
