A glance at a jumbled Phillies outfield

Recently, a report from Todd Zolecki ofMLB.comcame out about the possibility of Ben Revere being swapped with the Los Angeles Angels.

However, if you look at the amount of outfielders the team has, there is not much room for all of them and with none of them truly solidifying themselves for an everyday job, who’s the odd man out?

If there is going to be a rebuild, the reconstruct has to begin now. One step in that direction is minimizing those deepest on defense. Below is a list comprised of the packed outfield the Phillies own. Keep in mind that third basemen Cody Asche has been moved to Triple A to learn left field.

Dominic Brown

The 2014 season saw a complete opposite Dom Brown as he finished with just 10 homers compared to a 27 home run campaign in 2013. Since late April, due to an Achilles injury, Brown has been with Lehigh Valley and seems to be finding his swing with a .329 batting average. He has not yet gone yard, however.

Darin Ruf

Through 31 games, Ruf is batting .220 with three dingers and nine RBIs. With Ryan Howard still on the team, Ruf doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Ben Revere

Revere would provide zero power for the Angels and is not known to walk much. His game is based off of his singles as last season he was tied for the league lead with 184 hits. However only 22 of them were for extra bases.

Grady Sizemore

The veteran right fielder and three-time All-Star, has been in trade talks because of the fact that he does not fit any of the Phillies’ future plans. Sizemore has been hot with his bat over the last couple of weeks.

Jeff Francoeur

“Frenchy” has been quite a surprise for the Phils and has been a quality bat off the bench. On the season, Francoeur is batting .229 with three home runs. Francoeur has been solid as a pinch-hitter and his arm won the game for the Phillies against the Pirates a couple of weeks ago.

Odubel Herrera

The rookie and Rule-5 pick started the season off hot but cooled down in late April and now May. Strikeouts have been the biggest issue for Herrera, he’s been fanned 25.9 percent of the time. He has 32 strikeouts compared to only five walks, which is one of the main reasons he has gone from leadoff to batting seventh.
