Another week, another mobile quarterback for Eagles to face

There are always just players who slipped away, and Russell Wilson fits the bill as one of those players for the Eagles.

Multiple reports circulating during the 2012 draft implied that the Birds coveted the Wisconsin signal-caller, but Wilson was taken off the board at No. 75 overall, 13 picks before the Eagles “settled” for Nick Foles.

Three years later, the Seahawks have a championship and the Eagles are still looking for their franchise quarterback.

His numbers are impressive; a 63.7 completion percentage with 64 touchdowns to just 24 interceptions. He has also tallied 1,707 yards and nine rushing touchdowns so far as a pro.

So how do the Eagles prepare to stop him?

“It’s difficult because we don’t have anybody as athletic,” Chip Kelly said. “But that’s no different than any quarterback you face. We didn’t have anybody that could simulate Cam Newton. We don’t have a 6-foot-5, 250‑pounder — unless we went to the Sixers and grabbed one of their power forwards.”

The Birds harassed Newton in Week 10 and were able to keep equally mobile Colin Kaepernick in check in their Week 4 loss, but there is something special about Wilson that makes him different.

“He throws the ball extremely well,” Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who was with the Browns when he scouted Wilson in 2012. “And you know, you put it all together, I think they found a good system for him in Seattle. He’s playing well. He led his team to a Super Bowl, and it’s not a surprise to me after watching him come out.”

Kelly familiar with Carroll, Seahawks

For the second time this season Chip Kelly will face an old college buddy.

After battling with 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh back in Week 4, the former Oregon and Pac-12 skipper faces another familiar foe Week 14 in Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.

The coach visited the Seahawks back in 2010 and still remembers a lot about the team.

“I was just watching practice,” Kelly said. “I’ve known Pete. We were in the same league together. I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for him. He did an unbelievable job when he was at USC and he’s doing the same exact thing with the Seahawks.”
