Beanie Sigel Pleads Guilty to Failing to File Income Taxes

Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel pleaded guilty today to failing to file income taxes for three years and faces a maximum of three years in prison when he is sentenced in November.

Sigel, whose given name is Dwight Grant, admitted in U.S. District Court that between 2003 and 2005 he did not file returns for what the government says is in excess of $450,000. The plea was expected as Sigel had previously waived indictment on the charges.

Sigel’s lawyer, Fortunato Perri Jr., said he will challenge the loss amount provided by federal prosecutors prior to sentencing.

“He’s accepted his responsibility for failure to file the income tax returns, but the issue in regards to the loss amount is something I think will need to be resolved prior to sentencing,” Perri said after the hearing.

Sigel, who still resides in Philadelphia, has had numerous run-ins with the law. In 2005, he served 10 months in prison for illegal gun possession and then served a day in jail for violating probation on that charge. He was also acquitted on an attempted murder charge in connection to a shooting in West Philadelphia.

Here’s his newest single dropped last month on July 13. It’s part of a new album tentatively called “The Classic” (the name’s changed a couple times in the last year):
