Bike Works fundraises with bike art

The 15-year-old Neighborhood Bike Works held its annual Bike Part Art Show this weekend at the Magic Gardens on South Street.

The show began in 2002 as a way to celebrate the work of Neighborhood Bike Works as well as a way to raise money for their programs. Artists around the city donate art incorporating bicycles, many of which use bike parts in the art.

“Everyone donates,” said David Bevacqua, the group’s program director. Pieces come from bike shops, police departments, private donors, even trips to the dump to find usable bike parts. “This is the ultimate end of reusing. Broken bikes we take in and fix, parts we find we are able to use, and unusable pieces we can make art out of.”

Bike Works encourages recycling, life skills and health. Bevacqua said the goal of the organization has always been youth development above simply bike advocacy.
