Bill Clinton to speak at Lewis Katz memorial service at Temple

Former President Bill Clinton headlines the list of speakers for the Lewis Katz memorial service Wednesday at Temple University.

The university announced the speakers list today, which also includes former Gov. Ed Rendell, current Gov. Tom Corbett, Mayor Michael Nutter, US Sen. Cory A. Booker (D-NJ), Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider, Temple alumnus Bill Cosby, Inquirer Editor Bill Marimow and author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Katz’s grandson, Ethan Silver, his daughter, Melissa Silver, and his son, Drew, will speak for the family.

Temple President Neil D. Theobald, as well as Patrick J. O’Connor, Board of Trustees chair, will speak for the university community.

The memorial service for Katz, a 1963 Temple graduate and former University Trustee, will take place on Temple’s Main Campus in North Philadelphia at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The service will be held at the Temple Performing Arts Center, which was was formerly called the Baptist Temple, at 1837 N. Broad St.

Katz, 72, was well known for his generosity and philanthropy efforts across the county but especially in Philadelphia. In his honor his fellow member’s of the university’s Board of Trustees will name Temple’s School of Medicine in his honor. He has served on the university’s board since 1998.

Katz died in a plane crash Sunday morning just days after he and H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest successfully bid for controlling interest in the parent company that publishes the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com.
