Birds work out offensive lineman, looking to improve Vick’s blocking

It’s no secret the Eagles need offensive line help. Yesterday, they took a step toward addressing that by bringing in Chris Williams.

Less than 24 hours after Chicago released him, the Eagles brought Williams in for a workout.

“Now, I will get an opportunity to go play somewhere, and I’m excited about that,” Williams the Chicago Tribune. “The Bears are a good team, they will do well, and I will miss the guys. It sucks being released and that type of thing. But sitting on the bench here for the whole year wasn’t going to help me in free agency. Now, I’ll get a chance somewhere else.”

The 27-year-old was the Bears’ No. 1 pick (14th overall) in the 2008 NFL draft, but he’s struggled with inconsistent play and injuries in his four-plus seasons in the league. Williams, who started 38 games, has the ability to play guard and tackle.

The Eagles lost starting left tackle Jason Peters before the season started and are now without starting center Jason Kelce. Fill-ins Demetress Bell and Dallas Reynolds have looked average at best, and now guard Danny Watkins is starting to regress. King Dunlap is working his way back into the mix as well.

On Tuesday, coach Andy Reid didn’t leave out the possibility of improving his team with a trade or roster move. The trade deadline follows Week 8.

“Every day we go over that,” Reid said. “We go over our personnel and whatever is available either on other teams through trades or guys that get cut.”
