Philadelphia mega developer Bart Blatstein has announced that he is planning to build a casino along North Broad Street, at the site of the Inquirer building.
The casino would be built on three contiguous blocks on Callowhill St from Broad Street to 17th Street.
Blatstein said the casino site plans call for retail shops, restaurants, and theater facilities as well as the only casino in the heart of the city. Approval for the project will depend on him securing the license that is now available because of the failed Foxwoods casino bid.
This just reaffirms his comments to Metro yesterday that he stole the Inquirer building at the price of $22 million.
The area of the city surrounding the Inquirer building has long been the source of development conversation, and many ideas have surfaced for extending the success of South Broad Street to the north of City Hall. Utilizing 400 N. Broad St. could be seen as a jumpstart for this type of expansion, or might be feared to bring and entrench the unsavory aspects associated with casino gambling into the area. Community opposition to the previously approved Sugarhouse and the failed Foxwoods bid was strong and figures to mount against a casino in any neighborhood in the city.
