Bus of asylum seekers arrives in Philadelphia from Texas

An additional bus of asylum seekers arrived in Philadelphia Sunday morning from Del Rio, Texas, marking 21 total buses since Nov. 16 of last year.

City officials reported that 47 asylum seekers traveled from Texas to Philadelphia and upon arrival at 30th Street Station, 38 of them were transported to the city’s welcoming facility on E. Luzerne Street in North Philly.

The individuals and families that arrived on Sunday were from Peru, Columbia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Brazil. In observance of Mother’s Day, arriving mothers were greeted by volunteers with flowers.

To date, Philadelphia has received over 900 asylum seekers and has continued to build on the city’s efforts—in coordination with key nonprofit partners—to provide shelter and support with emergency health screenings, food and water, legal and social services and on-site language interpretation. There is also a medical triage available to those who need medicare care.
