Camden man charged with murdering his mother

Prosecutors announced this weekend that they have charged a Camden man who is accused of shooting his mother to death.

Pedro Mercado, 22, allegedly shot his mother, 38-year-old Iris Sanchez, 38, inside her home on the 1100 block of N. 18th St.

Police received a 911 call at 5:36 p.m. Friday and found Sanchez, who they transported to Cooper university Hospital. Sanchez died from her injuries at 7:25 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Mercado was located by Camden County Sheriff officers about a mile away,near the intersection of Haddon and Benson streets around 8 p.m.

Formal criminal charges were not announced.Law enforcement officials said the investigation is ongoing.

It wasthe seventh homicide in Camden in 2016.
