CAMDEN – Camden residents will get a chance at a public hearing Tuesday night to comment on a plan that would allow the city to rehire some of its laid-off police and firefighters by raising property taxes before a City Council vote on the issue.
Mayor Dana Redd’s proposal calls for an amended budget with a 23-percent property-tax levy increase. The plan, already been approved by the state’s Local Finance Board, would generate $4.2 million that would be used to rehire 47 police officers and 13 firefighters. Nearly half the police force and a quarter of firefighters have been laid off.
