Can’t turn over a new Leaf: Flyers fall late

It was almost a sweet reunion for Kris Versteeg. Until Toronto’s Darryl Boyce netted the game-winner late in the third period Thursday and handed the Flyers a 3-2 loss.

Despite the defeat, the Flyers (86 points) remained three points up on the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference standings.

But Versteeg, the man the Flyers acquired in a trade from Toronto, certainly did his part, scoring twice against his former team, the Maple Leafs.

Versteeg found the back of the net on a slap shot in the first period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead, then added his 17th goal of the season on a wrister in the second to make it 2-1.

Rookie goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30-of-33 shots. Chris Pronger saw significant minutes in his first game back from a hand injury, and was credited with an assist on Versteeg’s first goal.
