Casey emerging as new hero for Union

Philadelphia Union v Columbus Crew Conor Casey netted two goals last weekend for the Union in a 3-0 win over New York.

The spotlights were on, the stage was set and an unsung hero emerged to lead the Union to a 3-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls last weekend.

Forward Conor Casey netted two of his five goals on the season in a rout of the division rivals to move the Union (7-5-4) into second place in the Eastern Conference.

“Obviously, as a forward, it’s always my goal to score,” said Casey. “Jack’s [McInerney’s] been on fire all year, so it’s nice to be able to contribute a little bit and take some pressure off of him. We haven’t been too successful at home this year, so to have an exciting game like that means a lot.”

But the Union have found success at PPL Park in the month of June. They beat the Columbus Crew, 3-0, on June 5 before ousting the Red Bulls, 3-0, this past Sunday. On Saturday, they will face FC Dallas (8-3-5) in what will be a stiff test to close out the month. Casey thinks if the team can stick to its gameplan, they’ll continue to find success.

“It starts on defense,” he said. “We need to get people back defensively and play strong as a unit, and then take advantage of the chances that we get on offense. It’s worked so far and I think we’ll have a good chance to win any game if we can stick to that plan. Saturday should be no different.”

A win Saturday would give the Union 28 points. If the Montreal Impact lose Saturday, the Union would sit just one point below them for first place in the Eastern Conference. As Fourth of July draws near, the Sons of Ben potentially will have plenty to cheer about. The Blue and Gold are marching forward fast.

Kudos to Jack

Jack McInerney was named to the U.S. men’s national team roster for 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Casey explained what this honor means.

“It’s great for him,” Casey said. “He’s had a really successful season so far and he’s proved that he deserves a chance with the national team. I’m sure he’s really excited and I hope it works out for him. Everyone’s happy for him and it’s a big moment in his career.”
