Chip Kelly not interested in taking Texas opening

Just as rumors had swirled about Chip Kelly going to USC earlier this season, the same popped up Monday about the open job at Texas.

He dismissed the possibility unconditionally.

“I understand you have to ask the question, but I’m not involved in any jobs,” Kelly said. “I only coach the Philadelphia Eagles. We’re going to prepare for the Bears, we’re going to prepare for the Cowboys after that and hopefully we get an opportunity to go to the playoffs. I plan to be here for awhile.”

Texas head coach Mack Brown stepped down from the program after a week-long “will he or won’t he” saga unfurled in the public sector.

Kelly was just the latest high-profile coach — college and pro — to be dragged into the saga. Alabama head coach Nick Saban, winner of the last two BCS National Championship games, was also questioned about the Texas job before Brown even stepped down.

The Texas job is one of the premier positions in the country, and carries with it a large salary. The huge alumni and booster base backing Austin would happily buy out Kelly’s contract.

Kelly had a 46-7 record in his four seasons with Oregon before coming to the Eagles, but he never won a national title. His highest finish was No. 2 in the AP poll after winning the Fiesta Bowl last season.
