City says boy scouts’ group reneged on promise

PHILADELPHIA. Leaders of a local Boy Scouts group were “talking out of both sides of their mouths” regarding its stance on homosexuality, a lawyer for the city said yesterday during opening arguments of a federal trial according to published reports.

Attorney David Smith, representing the city, told jurors the Cradle Council went back on its word after signing a 2003 statement that it would not discriminate against gays, according to reports.

Cradle Council attorney Jason Gosselin argued the city wanted the group to denounce the national organization’s policy, which it does not have to do.
