The University City District has announced a contest to name Philadelphia’s next public space.
The title for the area around 30th Street station, which will be renovated in a series of projects, is up for grabs.
Submissions, which can be sent to newpublicspace@universitycity.org, are due by midnight on September 30 and must include the proposed name, an explanation and contact information. The winner will receive a $500 gift certificate from Amtrak.
PennDOT, along with a group of stakeholders including Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, the Streets Department and Amtrak, is reclaiming the outer parking lane along Market Street as a 40-foot wide sidewalk.
The University City District expects the project, which will be completed by Labor Day weekend, will bolster efforts to create a landscaped public space with seating and seasonal greenery. The space will host activities such as music performances yoga classes, and holiday celebrations.
