Death on railroad tracks

A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a CSX train at a crossing near 23rd and Race streets yesterday. Struck by a train with 92 freight cars, the man — reportedly in his 40s from a nearby apartment complex — didn’t have identification on him. He was declared dead at about 1 a.m. near his heavily damaged wheelchair, which apparently got caught in the tracks as he tried to cross.

CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan didn’t have details about the incident, but said the train was in transit from Selkirk, N.Y., to Hamlet, N.C., a juncture of two major CSX lines.
