DeVan promoted, Watkins benched

Coach Andy Reid told reporters (well, hinted) that No. 1 draft pick Danny Watkins had been demoted from his starting right guard position.

Newly-acquired veteran Kyle DeVan was taking reps with the first-team offense yesterday at practice and looks to be the Week 1 starter.

“This is the best move right now,” said right tackle Todd Herremans.

Neither Watkins nor DeVan would directly answer questions. Watkins said that he had been “asked not to say anything” by the coaching staff.

While Reid didn’t come right out and say it, it sure sounded like Watkins was benched.

“Sometimes, it’s good to take a step backwards before two steps forward,” Reid said.
