Devil’s Den has always been a leader in Philly’s craft beer scene, and also in honoring the women who made history in that world and beyond. And this Thursday offers an opportunities to celebrate both beer and the women who brew it with “There’s No Beer Without Women: Miller Lite Toast to Mary Isle.”
The extended happy hour is a celebration of the new launch of Miller Lite’s limited-edition Mary Isle can, inspired by the country’s first recorded female brewer and her revolutionary contributions to the American brewing industry. The event will take place on Thursday, June 30, from 5 to 8 p.m., and while there, attendees can get a first taste of the new brew and indulge in refreshments from Devil’s Den. Visitors will also learn all about The Pink Boots Society — an organization built to encourage and support women and non-binary individuals in brewing.
As a release states, in 1734, Mary Isle successfully ran a Philadelphia brewery, becoming the first American woman to own and operate one. But through time, women were excluded from the industry as others saw an opportunity to cash in on the nation’s love of beer, forcing most women out of the business altogether. The new edition comes just in time for Independence Day weekend and Miller Lite is reimagining its iconic design to celebrate the trailblazing impact women have made in beer with the limited-edition can.
“When people think of the beer industry, they think of men…there are very few people who realize that we actually have women to thank for beer in America,” said Elizabeth Hitch, Senior Director of Marketing for Miller Lite in a statement. “There’s no better time to celebrate and put women back into the history books of beer than on the single largest beer selling weekend in America.”
To make their mark even more, Miller Lite will donate $5 from any case purchased online via Drizly or Instacart from Monday, June 27 through Monday, July 4 to the Pink Boots Society.
The mission of the Pink Boots Society is to assist, inspire and encourage women and non-binary individuals in the fermented beverage industry through education,” said Erin Wallace, Owner of Devil’s Den and board member of the Pink Boots Society in a statement. “Our scholarship program offers opportunities for women and non-binary individuals to further their education and advance their careers, and every year we are able to expand our scholarship offerings and the numbers of recipients thanks to generous donations and fundraising.”
Additionally, the beer brand is committing to the long-term development and representation of women in the beer industry to support the next generation of female brewers.
For the celebratory happy hour however on June 30, Devil’s Den will set up an appetizer buffet with fare including cheese and charcuterie, dips and crudité, chicken skewers, hot dog wraps, pretzel bites with IPA cheese sauce and much more. The evening will also feature a representative from Miller Brewing Company who can answer more questions about the new brew and the brand’s charitable work. This event is free to attend, with registration required online through Eventbrite. Registration includes entry to the event, Mary Isle cans and non-alcoholic libations.
