DOT Sec’y LaHood to tour aging SEPTA bridge

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Norristown tomorrow visiting with SEPTA officials to discuss the American Jobs Act.

LaHood, Federal Transit Administration Administrator Peter Rogoff and SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey will ride the Norristown High Speed Line to the Bridgeport Viaduct, a bridge built in 1911. The structure is in need of major repair, but has not been upgraded because SEPTA cannot afford the $34 million cost for construction.

The bridge is among more than a dozen projects SEPTA showed Rogoff during a previous visit and says it could start work on immediately if a federal Jobs Act were passed. LaHood and others will describe how jobs that would be created with the passage of Jobs Act would help transit agencies improve their crumbling infrastructure.
