Word of Jamaal Charles’ release from the Chiefs had many NFL teams digging into his recent injury history and contemplating whether the 30-year-old running back, the most productive in Kansas City history would be a good pick up when free agency begins on March 9.
At the NFL combine, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was asked about whether he thinks the downhill runner would be a fit in Philly.
“I’ve got history with him in Kansas City for three years and he’s a tremendous running back and we will evaluate him now,” the coach said, “tosee how he can fit into our offense.”
He ran a 4.36 in his NFL combine and has scored 43 touchdowns with a 5.5 yards per carry average. He is also barely 30. On paper the stats make him appealing but he has missed 24 of the Chiefs’ last 32 games and injury woes can ruin everything.
The Eagles are in a good position, if needed, to cut ties with Ryan Mathews, who is also oft injured but pales in comparison to the potent Charles.
Philly also has a slew of young running backs who would do well to learn from Charles in Wendell Smallwood, Byron Marshall, Kenjon Barner and others.
