Authorities are trying to identify a driver who struck and killed a man crossing the street Tuesday night in the Cedarbrook section of Northwest Philadelphia.

The crash happened just before 11:15 p.m. on the 7900 block of Ogontz Avenue, according to police. Medics pronounced the pedestrian — 47-year-old Toby Maurice Bryant, who lived in Oxford Circle — dead at the scene, according to the PPD.

Detectives believe, based on a preliminary investigation, that Bryant was crossing on a red light and that he was not in the crosswalk when he was hit, police said.

A witness told officers that the driver briefly stopped following the crash and got out to check on the damage to his car, authorities said. He then fled the area and was last seen going north on Ogontz, according to investigators.

The PPD released surveillance images and video of the hit-and-run Wednesday. Investigators described the vehicle as a silver Ford sedan with tinted windows that likely now has moderate or heavy damage to the hood and front windshield.
