Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski to retire after 2021-22 season

Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is expected to retire following the 2021-22 college basketball season, according to multiple reports.

Krzyzewski is the winningest coach in men’s Division I college basketball history with 1,170 career wins, 12 Final Fours, and five national championships — the latter two all coming with Duke. He also has the most NCAA Tournament wins (97) and weeks ranked atop the Associated Press Top 25 poll (126).

Only UCLA’s John Wooden has more national titles than Krzyzewski.

The 74-year-old transformed the Duke basketball program from afterthought to a national powerhouse, producing NBA first-round draft picks in the process.

Duke associate head coach Jon Scheyer has agreed to become the program’s next head coach where he’ll spend the next season waiting in the wings under Krzyzewski.

Scheyer was the lead recruiter for eventual stars in Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) and Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans) out of high school, which put him ahead in the search that included outside interviews — most notably Tommy Amaker of Harvard, per ESPN.

Last season, Duke went 13-11 to miss the NCAA Tournament outright for just the second time since 1984.
