Eagles have a whopping $26 million in cap space left this year

Sign Sam Bradford? A Fletcher Cox extension? A top free agent?

There are now a bevy of options for the Eagles, after it was revealed that after carrying over $7.25 million in cap space from last season, the team has an impressive $26 million left to spend in 2016.

And that is after team-friendly contracts extended to Lane Johnson, Vinny Curry, Najee Goode, Zach Ertz, Malcolm Jenkins and Brent Celek. This week’sJenkins deal, for example, created $1.5 million in cap room.

Howie Roseman and the rest of the Eagles front office saved a lot of money by moving dollars around and varying guaranteed amounts in the aforementionedcontracts, which also provide wiggle room for the team to either cut or restructure in the future.

They also gained $3.5 million by cutting veteran linebacker DeMeco Ryans, and even more ($2.9 million)when they sentRiley Cooper packing last month.

With the Eagles brass assembled to watch this year’s crop of prospects participate in the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Roseman, Doug Pederson and other Birds’ officials will be rubbing shoulders with agents and other NFL executives all week.

The time appears to be ripe for the Eagles to make a move toward becoming a lot more competitive, both in the long term and in 2016. Stay tuned.
