The Cowboys, their fans and defensive lineman Greg Hardy wanted to stir the pot Sunday when the often controversial player helped pay for a plane to fly over Lincoln Financial Field during Eagles practice pulling a banner reading:”WE STILL DEM BOYZ! #SACKSCOMIN!”
Though greeted with a deafening boo from more than 43,000 fans at the Birds’ final open practice, the players on the field simply chuckled. Well, some of them did. Others briefly looked toward the sky and then quickly focused on starting practice.
“It’s no big deal,” DeMeco Ryans, a veteran and Eagles clubhouse leader said.”We’re not concerned about them but it seems like they’re concerned about us.”
The Eagles and Cowboys don’t meet until Week 2 of the regular season –more than an entire month away — and Jordan Matthews told reporters he was simple “focused on the next practice,” not the 4:25 p.m. game in Philly on September 20.
“He spent money on that?” Matthews asked when he was prompted for a response.”I am saving my money. That’s whatever, I don’t even think bout that kind of stuff.”
The banner was paid for through a GoFundMe page, one that Hardy decided to pitch in $300 to toward the cause. Originally slated to read “We got the division,” the Hardy contribution came with a suggestion and the banner was eventually changed to reflect his message.
The full impact of the banner may have been compromised when the plane flew oversight during the National Anthem. Once the “Star Spangled Banner” was completed the boos echoed as the plane made a half-dozen passes before disappearing into the sky.
Jets fans recently pulled off a similar stunt, flying a banner over Patriots camp that read “Cheaters look up.”
