The 91st South Street Easter Promenade: Everything you need to know

Easter Sunday is right around the corner, and it seems like the most “Philly” way to celebrate the occasion is with the annual Promenade on South Street.

Currently in its 91st year and taking place on Sunday, March 31, the procession will begin at 12:30 p.m. (rain or shine) and will lead to the fan-favorite costume contest in Headhouse Square Plaza.

The annual event originated in Rittenhouse Square, but was moved to South Street in the 1980s. And with that move came some of the new(ish) traditions, including the addition of live performances, Mr. and Mrs. Cotton Tail, and the Best Dressed Pet category.

Those who want to join in on the fun can meet at 5th and South streets for the kickoff and work their way down to 2nd and Lombard alongside “Philly mascots, fuzzy friends, and neighborhood celebrities” in one of Philadelphia’s longest-running traditions. Free bunny ears will be available to those who participate, and locals can also join in on a South Street egg hunt before and after the event.

“Some of my fondest memories of South Street are attending the Promenade with my family. Creating outfits for this event became a big source of pride for my mom who would hand-make our coordinating family outfits,” said Shannon Maldonado, owner of SSHD business YOWIE in a statement. “And she was, of course, even prouder the few years that we won! I’m so glad this tradition is continuing with a new audience.”

The Promenade leads everyone directly to the costume contest, and in 2024, categories range from best dressed of certain age groups and a few specialty rounds—such as families, pets, bonnets and the best “Razzle Dazzle.”

Prizes for the Best Dressed Contest include gift cards for new district businesses like Moon + ArrowThe Philly Game ShopPartners and SonPhiladelphia Magic Gardens, and Eye’s Gallery as well, a release notes. All Best Dressed Contest participants will also receive candy goodies from the event’s sponsor, Frankford Candy.

“We are delighted to host the 91st Annual Easter Promenade, and all are invited to join us in strutting down South Street to celebrate this grand Philadelphia tradition,” added Eleanor Ingersoll, South Street Headhouse District Executive Director. “Hop into the rhythm of South Street’s rich history and vibrant future this Easter. Come out and show us your best spring fashion.”
