City workers may soon be able to share political opinions and support candidates, provided they comply with guidelines currently being considered by the City’s Board of Ethics.
At the board’s regular meeting yesterday, a municipal-employees’ union representative, government-watchdog group, ACLU and City Council chief-of-staff weighed in on proposed updates to rules in place since 1952. Workers could wear buttons, write letters to the editor and post lawn signs, if on their own time without using city resources.
City Council employees would remain completely exempt to the rules, to the dismay of the Committee of Seventy, which supported the overall loosening of restrictions.
